Fought in the War of 1812 as a Virginia soldier.
In 1832 Simon Miller and his family moved to Richmond, VA where they stayed about a year, hiring out the slaves. The following he followed his brother and father, moving to Hardeman County, TN and shortly after settled in Fayette County.
A history of Tennessee with sketches of Fayette and Hardeman Counties published 1887 at Nashville and found in the Memphis Library on page 867 has an item on Simon Miller's son Simon Miller, Jr. in which it is stated that Simon Miller Jr. 1790 was born in Virginia, moved to Fayette County in 1833, and died there April 5, 1864 and his wife Martha G. Rivers (Patsy) died there in 1837.
The brothers Simon and William Miller and their father William were prominent planters and owned a number of tracts of land in the territory where Haywood County corners with Fayette and Hardeman, near
Dancyville, Whiteville and Brownsville. Their names appear frequently on the records of all three counties.
At the time of Simon's death he had a sack of gold hidden in the house. An exhaustive search was made but to no avail. Years later, when the place was inhabited by Negroes, the money was found while repairing the house. Part of this was restored to the Miller
heirs.
The Old MILLER CEMETERY: It is located about 10 miles NW from Whiteville and 6 miles east from Dancyville, (between Popular and Bear Creek, on the Dancyville - Eurekaton Rd, then south about a mile on a private lane, on the farm of Pat Mann, who has owned the property for about 15 years - Lary Walker) The old Capt. Lieut. William Miller’s home site was a few hundred feet from this cemetery. The six-foot high & 3-brick thick wall around the Miller Cemetery was made about 1863,(to surround the 33’ x 78’ plot). Four generations of the Miller family are buried there; though a number of the graves are marked, a large number of the original stone are broken beyond recognition. About 1905, this section around Whiteville, TN, was troubled with gravediggers or grave robbers. These marauders got into this place, broke open the vaults and gave this spot the general appearance of an Assyrian ruin. A number of the slabs are 6’ long x 4’ wide and 3” and 4” thick. These were shipped from St. Louis by boat to Memphis, TN, then by wagon to the Miller Cemetery. The Negro’s in the vicinity of this cemetery have an idea that the place is haunted. There is no house within a mile and after dark, it would not require a very vivid imagination to agree with them. Brush and trees cover the spot and the wall is not readily visible from a distance. The Miller slaves are buried a few hundred feet from this cemetery.
Simon married Martha G Rivers daughter of William Rivers Lieut. and Sara Neal on 6 Nov 1816 in Brunswick County, VA. Martha was born in 1794 in Greenville County, VA. She died on 3 Apr 1837 in Haywood County, TN.
(Martha's father was Lieut. William Rivers, father of Martha G. Rivers Miller, moved to Bedford Co., VA in 1817, where he died in 1818. Simon Miller (V), his son-in-law, was executor of the Rivers estate (1818-1823 Bedford Co., VA Will Book, pages12-223-404-11). His estate inventoried 2983 pounds, 11 shillings, but the names of his heirs are not given. Lieut. William Rivers fought in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Militia, Dinwiddie Co., VA 1789 (Dinwiddie Order Book). There were several families of Rivers in Dinwiddie Co., VA, but one of the earliest mention of a “Rivers” surname in Virginia is Robert Rivers, Charles City Co., VA in 1742.)
