War Department Record of Captain Lieut. William Miller was furnished to Mrs. Ben C. Jarvis (National DAR Number 207749 (add 178) by the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, DC June 1, 1929.
The records of the War Department in Washington show that one William Miller served in the Revolutionary War, a Lieut. in Captain Anthony Singleton's Company, 1st Artillery Regiment, Continental Troops, commanded by Col. Charles Harrison. He was commissioned January 13, 1777. Was promoted to Captain Lieut. August 15, 1778 and served as that rank in Captain Whitehead Coleman's Company; in Captain Dandridge's Company and in the company commanded by Captain Samuel Eddens, composed of Captain Pierce's, Burwell's. Dandridge and Edden's companies incorporated and same regiment. His name appears on the undated list showing arrangements of the Virginia line 1st, January 1783 under the heading "Numerical List of Dedundant Officers belonging to the 1st Regiment of Artillery".
Tradition has been handed down that he was Captain of Washington's staff and that at one time he defended the General from the saber attack of a British soldier at the cost of a severe wounds in the arm. he carried the
scas to his death. (I find this a little hard to believe, but it is a nice story. -

William Miller Jr., his brother Simon A. Miller and this father William Miller were prominent planters and landowners. they owned large tracts of land near Dancyville, Whiteville and Brownsville where Haywood, Fayette and Hardeman counties come together.
Their names are mentioned frequently in the records of all three counties.
William Miller died August 16,, 1841. His will, a lengthy document is recorded at Brownsville, Haywood County.
The Tennessee Millers are all buried in the old Miller Cemetery in Haywood County about ten miles northeast of Whiteville and about six miles from
Dancyville. This place is a few hundred yards from the site of the home of the elder William Miller and is enclosed by a brick wall about six feet high. The enclosure was made about 1863. Four generations of the Miller family are buried there. A number of graves are not marked and a number of the original stones are broken beyond recognition. About 1905 the section around Whiteville was troubled with grave robbers. These marauders got in this place, broke open the vaults and gave the general appearance of Assyrian ruin. A number of slabs are six feet long, four feet wide and three inches thick. These were shipped by boat from St. Louis to Memphis thence by wagon. The Negroes in the vicinity of this cemetery have the idea that the place is haunted. No houses are within a mile and after dark it would not require a very vivid imagination to agree with them. Brush and trees cover the spot and the wall is not readily visible at a distance.

+ 53 M i William Miller , Jr + 54 F ii Sally Miller + 55 M iii Simon A Miller 56 F iv Susannah Miller was born in Feb 1793. She died on 23 Nov 1861
Susanna died an old maid. When she was a girl in Virginia she was engaged to be married. Her sweetheart went on a trip through the mountains and never returned. As a skeleton was found several years later it was thought that he had been killed by robbers. After sometime elapsed and his returned became doubtful, Aunt Susan went to bed and there remained the rest of her life. She still attended church on her bed, carried by her slaves. It is said this behavior did not improve her disposition and that she was rather hard on her slaves. Her death occurred November 23, 1861..
