2 CONT Sir Richard Hawkins (c. 1562 – April 17, 1622, London) was a 17th century English seaman, exp
2 CONC lorer and Elizabethan "Sea Dog", was the only son of Admiral Sir John Hawkins by his first ma
2 CONC rriage.

2 CONT He was from his earliest days familiar with ships and the sea, and in 1582 he accompanied hi
2 CONC s uncle, William Hawkins, to the West Indies. In 1585 he was captain of a galliot in Drake'
2 CONC s expedition to the Spanish main, in 1588 he commanded a queen's ship against the Armada, an
2 CONC d in 1590 served with his fathers expedition to the coast of Portugal.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In 1593 he purchased the Dainty, a ship originally built for his father and used by him in hi
2 CONC s expeditions, and sailed for the West Indies, the Spanish Main and the South Seas. It seem
2 CONC s clear that his project was to prey on the oversea possessions of the king of Spain. Hawkins
2 CONC , however, in an account of the voyage written thirty years afterwards, maintained, and by th
2 CONC at time perhaps had really persuaded himself, that his expedition was undertaken purely for t
2 CONC he purpose of geographical discovery. After visiting the coast of Brazil, the Dainty passed t
2 CONC hrough the Straits of Magellan, and in due course reached Valparaíso.

2 CONT Having plundered the town, Hawkins pushed north, and in June 1594, a year after leaving Plymo
2 CONC uth, arrived in the Bay of San Mateo. Here the Dainty was attacked by two Spanish ships. Hawk
2 CONC ins was hopelessly outmatched, but defended himself with great courage. At last, when he hims
2 CONC elf had been severely wounded, many of his men killed, and the "Dainty" was nearly sinking, h
2 CONC e surrendered on the promise of a safe-conduct out of the country for himself and his crew.

2 CONT Through no fault of the Spanish commander this promise was not kept. In 1597 Hawkins was sen
2 CONC t to Spain, and imprisoned first at Seville and subsequently at Madrid. He was released in 16
2 CONC 02, and, returning to England, was knighted in 1603.

2 CONT In 1604 he became Member of Parliament for Plymouth and vice-admiral of Devon, a post which
2 CONC , as the coast was swarming with pirates, was no sinecure. In 1620 to 1621 he was vice-admira
2 CONC l, under Sir Robert Mansell of the fleet sent into the Mediterranean to reduce the Algeriar c
2 CONC orsairs. He died in London on 17 April 1622.

2 CONT John Hawkins, the son of a merchant, was born in Plymouth in 1532. He became a sea captain an
2 CONC d in 1562 became the first Englishman to start capturing people in Sierra Leone and selling t
2 CONC hem as slaves to Spanish settlers in the Caribbean. The following year his cousin, Francis Dr
2 CONC ake, joined him in these activities. As it was illegal for the settlers to buy from foreigner
2 CONC s, Hawkins and Drake soon came into conflict with the Spanish authorities.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In 1571 Hawkins was involved in a plot with Philip II to assassinate Elizabeth I. However, h
2 CONC e changed sides and his information helped William Cecil to have the main conspirators arrest
2 CONC ed and executed.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Hawkins was rewarded by being appointed Treasurer of the Navy. In 1577 John Hawkins helped t
2 CONC o introduce a new type of warship. This ships were longer in relation to their breadth (abou
2 CONC t three to one) and with the forcecastle and sterncastle greatly reduced. The mainmast was pl
2 CONC aced further forwardand the sails were flatter. This ships were more manoeuvrable than any wa
2 CONC rships that had been built before.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In July 1588 131 ships in the Spanish Armada left for England. The large Spanish galleons wer
2 CONC e filled with 17,000 well-armed soldiers and 180 Catholic priests.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On hearing the news Charles Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, held a council-of-war. Lo
2 CONC rd Howard decided to divide the fleet into squadrons. Hawkins, Francis Drake and Martin Frobi
2 CONC sher were chosen as the three other commanders of the fleet.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Howard went in his flagship, the Ark Royal (800 tons and a crew of 250). Frobisher was give
2 CONC n command of the largest ship in the fleet, the Triumpth (1,110 tons and a crew of 500 men) w
2 CONC hereas Drake was the captain of the Revenge (500 tons and a crew of 250) and Hawkins was aboa
2 CONC rd the Victory (800 tons and a crew of 250).
2 CONT 
2 CONT Lord Howard decided that the Spanish Armada should be attacked at both ends of the crescent
2 CONC . The Ark Royal attacked the right wing and the Revenge and the Triumph attacked Juan Martine
2 CONC z, de Recalde, commander of the Biscayan squadron on the left. Recalde on board the San Jua
2 CONC n de Portugal decided to come out and fight the English ships. He was followed by Gran Grin a
2 CONC nd the two ships soon got into trouble and had to be rescued by the Duke of Medina Sidonia o
2 CONC n board the San Martin.
2 CONT 
2 CONT At the end of the first day's fighting, only one ship was sunk. This was Spain's San Salvado
2 CONC r when a tremendous explosion tore out its stern castle and killed 200 members of the crew. I
2 CONC t was later discovered that a gunner's carelessness resulted in a spark reaching the gunpowde
2 CONC r in the rear hold.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The following morning Francis Drake and the crew of Revenge captured the crippled Rosario. Th
2 CONC is included Admiral Pedro de Vales and all his crew. Drake also found 55,000 gold ducats on b
2 CONC oard.
2 CONT 
2 CONT That afternoon Medina Sidonia announced that if any Spanish ship broke formation the captai
2 CONC n would be hanged immediately. He also told his captains that they must maintain a tight form
2 CONC ation in order to prevent further attacks from the English ships. This decision meant that th
2 CONC ey could only move towards Dunkirk at the speed of the slowest ship.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Constantly harassed by the English ships the slow moving Spanish Armada eventually reached Ca
2 CONC lais without further loss. The English fleet now dropped anchor half a mile away. Soon afterw
2 CONC ards they were joined by Lord Henry Seymour and his squadron of ships that had been controlli
2 CONC ng the seas off Dunkirk. This increased the English fleet by a third and was now similar in s
2 CONC ize to that of the Spanish fleet.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The Duke of Medina Sidonia now sent a message to the Duke of Parma in Dunkirk: "I am anchore
2 CONC d here two leagues from Calais with the enemy's fleet on my flank. They can cannonade me when
2 CONC ever they like, and I shall be unable to do them much harm in return." He asked Parma to sen
2 CONC d fifty ships to help him break out of Calais. Parma was unable to help as he had less than t
2 CONC wenty ships and most of those were not yet ready to sail.
2 CONT 
2 CONT That night Medina Sidonia sent out a warning to his captains that he expected a fire-ship att
2 CONC ack. This tactic had been successfully used by Francis Drake in Cadiz in 1587 and the fresh b
2 CONC reeze blowing steadily from the English fleet towards Calais, meant the conditions were idea
2 CONC l for such an attack. He warned his captains not to panic and not to head out to the open sea
2 CONC . Medina Sidonia confidently told them that his patrol boats would be able to protect them fr
2 CONC om any fire-ship attack that took place.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Medina Sidonia had rightly calculated what would happen. Charles Howard and Francis Drake wer
2 CONC e already organizing the fire-ship attack. It was decided to use eight fairly large ships fo
2 CONC r the operation. All the masts and rigging were tarred and all the guns were left on board an
2 CONC d were primed to go off of their own accord when the fire reached them. John Young, one of Dr
2 CONC ake's men, was put in charge of the fire-ships.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Soon after midnight the eight ships were set fire to and sent on their way. The Spaniards wer
2 CONC e shocked by the size of the vessels. Nor had they expected the English to use as many as eig
2 CONC ht ships. The Spanish patrol ships were unable to act fast enough to deal with the problem. T
2 CONC he Spanish captains also began to panic when the guns began exploding. They believed that th
2 CONC e English were using hell-burners (ships crammed with gunpowder). This tactic had been used a
2 CONC gainst the Spanish in 1585 during the siege of Antwerp when over a thousand men had been kill
2 CONC ed by exploding ships.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The fire-ships did not in fact cause any material damage to the Spanish ships at all. They dr
2 CONC ifted until they reached the beach where they continued to burn until the fire reached the wa
2 CONC ter line. Medina Sidonia, on board the San Martin, had remained near his original anchorage
2 CONC . However, only a few captains had followed his orders and the vast majority had broken forma
2 CONC tion and sailed into the open sea.
2 CONT 
2 CONT At first light Medina Sidonia and his six remaining ships left Calais and attempted to catc
2 CONC h up with the 130 ships strung out eastwards towards the Dunkirk sandbanks. Some Spanish ship
2 CONC s had already been reached by the English fleet and were under heavy attack. San Lorenzo, a s
2 CONC hip carrying 312 oarsmen, 134 sailors and 235 soldiers, was stranded on the beach and was abo
2 CONC ut to be taken by the English.
2 CONT 
2 CONT With their formation broken, the Spanish ships were easy targets for the English ships loade
2 CONC d with guns that could fire very large cannon balls. The Spanish captains tried to get thei
2 CONC r ships in close so that their soldiers could board the English vessels. However, the Englis
2 CONC h ships were quicker than the Spanish galleons and were able to keep their distance.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The battle of Gravelines continued all day. One of the most exciting contests was between Fra
2 CONC ncis Drake in the Revenge and Duke of Medina Sidonia in the San Martin. Drake's ship was hi
2 CONC t several times before being replaced by Thomas Fenner in the Nonpareil and Edmund Sheffiel
2 CONC d in the White Bear, who continued the fight without success.
2 CONT 
2 CONT All over the area of sea between Gravelines and Dunkirk fights took place between English an
2 CONC d Spanish ships. By late afternoon most ships were out of gunpowder. The Duke of Medina Sidon
2 CONC ia was now forced to head north with what was left of the Spanish Armada. The English ships d
2 CONC id not follow as Charles Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, was convinced that most Span
2 CONC ish ships were so badly damaged they would probably sink before they reached a safe port.
2 CONT 
2 CONT That evening Francis Drake wrote to a friend: "God hath given us so good a day in forcing th
2 CONC e enemy so far to leeward, as I hope in God the Duke of Parma and the Duke of Sidonia shall n
2 CONC ot shake hands this few days". John Hawkins was also pleased with his day's work: "All that d
2 CONC ay Monday we followed the Spaniards with a long and great fight, wherein there was great valo
2 CONC ur showed generally by our company... Our ships, God be thanked, have received little hurt."
2 CONT 
2 CONT Hawkins also showed concern for his men: "The men have long been unpaid and need relief." Cha
2 CONC rles Howard was also angry that his men had not received their wages. He was also disturbed b
2 CONC y the condition of his men. The lack of fresh water caused an outbreak of disease. As they we
2 CONC re still waiting for their wages to be paid they were even unable to buy fresh food for thems
2 CONC elves. Howard wrote bitterly: "It is a most pitiful sight to see, here at Margate, how the me
2 CONC n, having no place to receive them into here, die in the streets. I am driven myself, of forc
2 CONC e, to come a-land, to see them bestowed in some lodging; and the best I can get is barns an
2 CONC d outhouses. It would grieve any man's heart to see them that have served so valiantly to di
2 CONC e so miserably."

2 CONT After the Armada rounded Scotland it headed south for home. However, a strong gale drove man
2 CONC y of the ships onto the Irish rocks. Thousands of Spaniards drowned and even those who reache
2 CONC d land were often killed by English soldiers and settlers. Of the 25,000 men that had set ou
2 CONC t in the Armada, less than 10,000 arrived home safely.

2 CONT For his role in the victory Hawkins was knighted by Elizabeth I. Sir John Hawkins went on ano
2 CONC ther exhibition to the Caribbean and died in Puerto Rico in 1595.

2 CONT Henry III (1 October 1207 – 16 November 1272) was the son and successor of John "Lackland" a
2 CONC s King of England, reigning for fifty-six years from 1216 to his death. Mediaeval English mon
2 CONC archs did not use numbers after their names, and his contemporaries knew him as Henry of Winc
2 CONC hester. He was the first child king in England since the reign of Ethelred the Unready. Despi
2 CONC te his long reign, his personal accomplishments were slim and he was a political and militar
2 CONC y failure. England, however, prospered during his century and his greatest monument is Westmi
2 CONC nster, which he made the seat of his government and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine t
2 CONC o Edward the Confessor.

2 CONT He assumed the crown under the regency of the popular William Marshal, but the England he inh
2 CONC erited had undergone several drastic changes in the reign of his father. He spent much of hi
2 CONC s reign fighting the barons over the Magna Carta[citation needed] and the royal rights, and w
2 CONC as eventually forced to call the first "parliament" in 1264. He was also unsuccessful on th
2 CONC e Continent, where he endeavoured to re-establish English control over Normandy, Anjou, and A
2 CONC quitaine.
